The Artist

About Frank Oliva

Four decades of painting — from the skies of civil engineering to the shores of Hawai'i.

Frank Oliva is a self-taught Hawaiian artist who has spent over four decades mastering the art of color and abstraction. Born with a passion for beauty and an engineer's eye for detail, Frank spent the early part of his career as a civil engineer — a discipline that sharpened his spatial thinking and love of structure before he ever picked up a brush.

A transformative trip to Australia in the 1990s opened Frank's eyes to the ancient Aboriginal dot-painting tradition. Captivated by its rhythm, symbolism, and vibrant palette, he began weaving these techniques into his own evolving language — eventually developing a signature style that blends Hawaiian colorism with Aboriginal dot-work and expressive abstraction.

Frank paints from his studio in Kailua, O'ahu, just steps from the trade winds and the turquoise waters that inspire so much of his work. His canvases pulse with the energy of the islands: ocean gradients, volcanic landscapes, the slow drift of clouds over the Ko'olau Range.

He is a Saatchi Art trending artist whose work has been collected internationally, and in 2017 he was featured in Art Journey Abstract Painting published by North Light Books — a celebration of contemporary abstract artists from around the world.

Career Milestones

1

Civil Engineering Career

Frank spent the better part of two decades working as a civil engineer, developing a precise eye for form, proportion, and the interplay of structure and space — skills that quietly prepared him for the artist's life ahead.

2

The Australia Revelation

A trip to Australia introduced Frank to Aboriginal dot painting. The rhythmic dot-work, earth-toned palettes and deep spiritual connection to landscape resonated deeply — and permanently altered the direction of his artistic journey.

3

Hawaiian Colorist

Settling in Kailua, O'ahu, Frank embraced the explosive color of the islands. He fused Aboriginal technique with the vivid hues of Hawai'i — turquoise seas, molten lava, tropical florals — creating a style that is wholly his own.

4

International Recognition

Frank's work reached collectors worldwide through Saatchi Art, where he became a trending artist. His paintings have found homes across the U.S., Europe, and the Pacific — each one carrying a piece of the Hawaiian spirit.
